With the expansion of the road over the Simplon Pass (1800-1805) Napoleon had the hospice built, which should also serve as barracks. The construction was begun in 1813 and completed in 1831 by the canons of the Great St. Bernard who have been operating it ever since. A large, bulky box with long corridors and monastic severity in the width of the pass.
