Andreas Schotel lived and worked from 1924 until his death for several months a year in his summer house in Esbeek. He was mainly inspired by the working people and the beautiful nature. The Andreas Schotel walking route takes you past workplaces of the artist, the summer residence “de Schuttel” and is a must for hikers and art lovers. Along the route, various images of Dishes of etchings have been placed on easels and artist Hannes Verhoeven makes a number of these etchings come to life, as it were, with his life-size sculptures. Art in nature offers a fascinating mix of two worlds which is very inspiring.

Schotel's art was naturalistic. Schotel's etchings show the landscape and the working people. The latter were depicted from the beauty of the work and not so much as an indictment of poverty. His etchings provide precise time documents of everything that was once common but gradually disappeared to make way for new things (primitive threshing machines, for example) that in turn have also disappeared again.

Schotel was friends with artist Jan van der Heijden from Netersel and with J.M. Lauwers, headmaster of Esbeek and writer of Langs de Hilverbanden, an occasional work about the Brabant landscape and people, for which he made ten etchings.

From 1924 onwards, Andreas Schotel came to Esbeek every year during the summer months. Initially he camped in a stable on the grounds of the "Oranjebond" and later in a garden shed of 2 x 2 meters on the same grounds. It was named "De Schuttel". Later, Schotel added another bedroom of 2 x 2 meters and a tiny studio. In 2000, "De Schuttel", on the initiative of the Friends of Andreas Schotel Esbeek Foundation and the Heemkunde Esbeek working group, was restored as a lasting show of appreciation for the work of this artist. The municipality of Hilvarenbeek appreciated this initiative by awarding the monument prize.

Andreas Schotel only found recognition in old age. In 1979, the 'Foundation Friends of Andreas Schotel' was founded in Esbeek. This also lends out etchings to Esbeek residents. In May 2009, the Andreas Schotel Museum was opened in Esbeek in the Schuttershof, a pub where the artist regularly visited.

In 2015, the 'Andreas Schotel walking and art route' was plotted along places where the artist worked. Easels and five sculptures made by the Esbeek artist Hannes Verhoeven (1984) are set up there. They are sometimes larger than life size and inspired by Schotel's work. One of them, in the Arnoldspark, is a six-metre high polychrome figure and depicts the Rotterdam artist himself. The primitive garden shed called De schuttel, where he stayed with his family during the summers when he was in Esbeek, is also part of the route.

For many years, De Schuttel was the summer home in Esbeek of the Rotterdam graphic artist Andreas Schotel (1896-1984) and his family.

It has been saved from demolition and is now a valuable part of the Andreas Schotel walking route.

For sixty summers, from 1924 to 1984, the Rotterdam etcher Andreas Schotel (1896-1984) came to Esbeek with great pleasure to work. He stayed there with his family, his wife and two daughters, in a kind of garden house that the locals called 'de Schuttel', a corruption of his name. The house is cherished by the Andreas Schotel Foundation in the state in which the artist left it - he could just walk in at any moment - and is opened on request. Until 1969 it measured two by two meters, after which it was enlarged by the length of a bed. The curtains behind the windows are red and white, in the style of Brabants bont. The attached studio has the dimensions of a wood shed. This is where he burned his paints. The house must have been very cramped for him and his family. Its austerity is completely in keeping with his Spartan attitude to life. For the villagers it was hard to understand that someone from the city liked to spend the summer in a hut. It is almost the oldest summer house in our country - From here he was among the farmers in two seconds and when he turned around he was in the forest.

Deep in the woods near Esbeek lies the former summer home of Andreas Schotel, the Rotterdam graphic artist who found his inspiration here in the first half of the 20th century. Schotel fell in love with rural Brabant and spent every summer there drawing, painting, and etching. His work captured the simple farm life: plowman with horse, farmers threshing, and the quiet rhythm of the countryside.

The wooden summer house, simply built and surrounded by pines and heathland, still exudes the atmosphere of that time. Here, Schotel worked in peace, far from the bustle of the city, observing and capturing the surroundings.

During a walk in this area, you not only walk through a beautiful stretch of Rovertsche Heide but also through a living piece of cultural history. The summer house is a reminder of the deep connection between art and landscape, and of the way nature can inspire artists.

Esbeek continues to honor Andreas Schotel with a museum and an art route through the area, where his works are placed within the landscape. This way the memory of the artist and his special summer spot remains alive.
