Chapel of St. George, Hinterschellenberg
In Hinterschellenberg there is a chapel dedicated to St. George. Nothing is known about its origins. However, the findings from the renovation in 1980/81 showed that the original chapel must have been built around 1700, but the building in its current form dates from around 1850/55.
Governor Joseph Schuppler reports on the chapel in the 1815 description of the region: "On the upper (rear) Schellenberg there is a small chapel in which services are often held from Bendern, where this place is parished."
For the people of Hinterschellenberg, the Kapile - as they call their chapel - has always been of great importance. For many years, Holy Mass has been celebrated every Thursday at 7.30 p.m. in the Chapel of St. George.

Almost nothing reliable is known about the life of Saint George, to whom the chapel of Niederschellenberg was dedicated, but the veneration of him goes back a long way to early Christianity. A martyr who is equated with George is said to have lived in the third century.
The legend of Saint George as a dragon slayer is very well known and widespread, however, and he is usually depicted - in paintings or as a statue - as the conqueror of the monster, often as a knight on horseback.
The memorial day of the very popular George - he is, among other things, the patron saint of the English kingdom - in the calendar of saints is April 23rd.
