Construction of the Bischofferode potash mine began in 1909. Despite all the political turmoil, potash salts were mined until December 31, 1993. Until 1971, in addition to above-ground storage on dumps, some of the ore was also returned underground. After that, only above-ground storage continued. After the mine's closure, work began on replanting the dump.

The spoil heap at Sonnenstein is a remarkable example of the changes in our landscape and the way we use resources. This heap consists of spoil and leftover rock from mining activities. Although it once represented an environmental impact of mining, the spoil heap at Sonnenstein is now an interesting place for nature lovers and hikers.

Nature has reclaimed this area in the years since mining ceased, and the heap is now part of an ecological success story, providing a home for plants and animals. At the same time, the spoil heap is a reminder of the region's past and mining history. Its transformation into a place for recreation and enjoyment of nature is a successful example of the reuse and sustainable management of formerly industrially used land.
