It all began on Cathedral Square, named after the Old Mariendom, which was demolished in 1805. The Hammaburg was built here from around 800, which had nothing in common with its stone cousins of the High Middle Ages: a collection of huts protected by wooden palisades. However, the huts were conveniently located. At the southern end of the square, where Große and Kleine Reichenstrasse merge, traders' flatboats landed in Hamburg's first port. At that time, shipping traffic on the Elbe already reached as far as today's Dresden. At the northeast end of the square, under the Dat Backhus bakery, there are still remains of a later city gate that overlooked Steinstrasse, the trade route to the east. Archaeologists suspect that its construction was similar to the famous Holsten Gate in Lübeck.
