In 1899, Ernst Ludwig founded the Darmstadt Artists' Colony and appointed the first seven artists: Joseph Maria Olbrich, Peter Behrens, Patriz Huber, Hans Christiansen, Paul Burck, Ludwig Habich and Rudolf Bosselt.
The artists started their work in Darmstadt with the construction of their homes and the studio building in which they would work in future and exhibit their work. Both the studio building, named after the patron Ernst-Ludwig-Haus, as well as the fully furnished artists' houses were shown to the public in 1901 in the first joint exhibition.
