A tower that was deliberately sawn off. Yes, really.
During this loop through Montrichard Val de Cher, you'll climb to the ruins of the Château de Montrichard. With views over the Cher, it's as if you were ruling the region yourself.
    Only... that keep didn't collapse.
It was deliberately lowered by Henry IV. Impressive.

    A magnificent view.

The fortress of Montrichard was built by the Amboise family during the 12th century. A real defensive structure, the fortress was erected on the rocky outcrop that dominates the town to watch over the Cher valley (located south of Amboise).

In the 15th century, King Louis XI ordered the construction of vast royal residences overlooking the Sainte Croix church, then the castle chapel.

The fortress of Montrichard was classified as a historical monument in 1877. From its enclosure, the view of the Cher valley is panoramic.

To fully explore the ruins, enjoy the panoramic views from the keep, and read the informational panels, most visitors spend between 1 to 2 hours at the Forteresse itself. If you plan to combine your visit with a stroll through the charming medieval town of Montrichard, explore the Sainte-Croix church, or enjoy a meal, you could easily spend half a day or more in the area.

Is Forteresse de Montrichard suitable for families with children, and are there specific family-friendly activities?

Yes, the Forteresse de Montrichard is generally considered family-friendly. Children often enjoy exploring the castle ruins and imagining medieval life. The site offers an engaging historical experience, and the panoramic views are a highlight for all ages. The town itself is also pleasant for family walks.

Are dogs allowed at Forteresse de Montrichard or on nearby trails?

While specific regulations for the interior of the Forteresse may vary, dogs on a leash are generally welcome on the outdoor grounds and on most public trails in the surrounding Montrichard area. The planned reopening of the square tower access in summer 2024 may increase visitor numbers during that season.

What is the historical significance of the keep at Forteresse de Montrichard, and why was it 'sawn off'?

The square keep, or Donjon, is the most impressive remaining feature, originally built in the 12th century. Its historical significance lies in its strategic role overlooking the Cher valley. Interestingly, the keep was not destroyed by natural collapse but was deliberately lowered by order of King Henri IV in 1589, as part of a broader policy to dismantle fortifications that could be used against the crown. This intentional reduction adds a unique layer to its history.

Are there any ongoing restoration efforts or new access points planned for the Forteresse de Montrichard?

Yes, the site has been undergoing restoration efforts since 2021. Notably, access to the square tower (the keep) and its exceptional panoramic views is planned to reopen to the public in the summer of 2024. These efforts aim to enhance the visitor experience and preserve this significant historical monument.
