The first documentary mention took place on May 15, 1306. The town of Steinburg has its origins in a castle complex that existed between the 8th and 10th centuries. Remnants of this wood and earth castle suggest a larger, two-part complex that was later built over by the castle, estate and village.
After 1686 Steinburg Castle came to the von Münchhausen family, who owned it until it was expropriated as part of the land reform in 1945. (Source: Wikipedia)

Not far from the castle is the cemetery with the tombstones of the Münchhausen family.
