When Bishop Rudolf von Verden wanted to protect himself against attacks by the Saxon dukes and the Bremen archbishops around 1195, he had the Rodenborg built. Around the castle, a 600-meter-long fortress wall formed an insurmountable bulwark against attackers for a long time - remains of the wall in the ground still testify to this today. Plans to expose these walls on the grounds of the Rotenburger Heimathaus or even to rebuild them failed because of the costs of up to more than a million euros, as reported by Elisabeth Quentin from the municipal environmental agency. Now a much cheaper alternative shows the course of the fortress, and this is "accurate to within a few centimeters", as Ulrich Beyersdorff from the Rotenburg Working Group on Nature and Environment reports: A "wall" made up of three different types of hedges, each about 80 centimeters high: copper beech, barberry and eelcoat.
