For the location of this second Catholic church in the city (the first was Saint Martin), the southeast side of the city was chosen. A neighborhood was just under construction (the Oosterpoort), especially for workers.
That is why the church was named after St. Joseph, carpenter and patron of the workmen. The church was designed by P.J.H. Cuypers. He turned it into an elegant neo-gothic structure with a high, slender tower. The interior was initially quite austere. At the dedication in 1887, the walls were plastered white with only a few decorations. Thanks to donations, the decoration became richer over time. For example, the windows were replaced by stained glass and bells were added to the tower. The tower's nickname is Drunkards' Tower, because its hexagonal shape makes two bells visible from any position. The official name of the church is the Cathedral Church of St.H. Martinus and Joseph.

St. Joseph's Cathedral (Dutch Sint-Jozefkathedraal) is the Roman Catholic Episcopal Church of the Diocese of Groningen-Leeuwarden in Groningen.
In 1886 the construction of the church began. On May 25, 1887, the Sint-Jozefkerk was consecrated. The interior of the church was initially kept very simple with its white plastered walls, but was further developed through donations from the parishioners, especially the couple Rikkers-Lubbers, for example through the lead glazing of the windows. The rich painting and the stained-glass windows contributed to St. Joseph's being included in the list of Rijksmonumente in 1974. In 1891, the parish of St. Martinus, which had previously encompassed all of Groningen, was divided and the Sint-Jozefkerk was elevated to the status of a parish church.

When the diocese of Groningen was re-established in 1955, the Sint-Martinuskerk was first elevated to the status of the diocese's cathedral. The Martinuskirche was built in 1895 - also according to plans by Pierre Cuypers - on the site of the Broerkerk, which was demolished for this purpose. In 1981, the Martinuskirche was closed and demolished the following year to make room for the university library. As a result, the then Sint-Jozefkerk took over the function of the episcopal church in 1981.
Due to the hexagonal shape of the tower, you can always see two or even three of the six clocks. Since multiple vision is a consequence attributed to drunkenness, the tower was nicknamed "dronkemanstoren" ("drunkard's tower").
