                      The area around Holmenkollen has long been used by the Oslo population as a sports facility for recreational and professional athletes. The Holmenkollbakken is considered the oldest ski jump in the world and is the most visited tourist attraction in Oslo. The first competitions were held in 1892.

                      So far, the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1930, 1966, 1982 and 2011 have been held at Holmenkollen.

                      The biathlon and cross-country skiing stadium at the foot of the ski jump encompasses many kilometers of trails that extend into the forests of the Marka bordering to the north. The Biathlon World Championships in 1986, 2000 and 2016 were held there. Parts of the Biathlon World Championships in 1990 and 1999 were held as part of the World Cup because they could not be held in Minsk or Kontiolahti due to the weather conditions. A mass start world championship was held in 2002, also as part of the World Cup races, as these competitions were not part of the program of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

                      The Nordic competitions of the 1952 Winter Olympics also took place at Holmenkollen.
