Parish church of St. Veit, Wachau cathedral

The parish church of St. Veit dates back to a donation from Emperor Henry II in 1014. It was built in the early 12th century as a Romanesque basilica with a low tower.

The parish church of St. Veit in the town of Krems an der Donau is a Roman Catholic church and dates back to a donation from Emperor Henry II in 1014. It was not until 1178 that Saint Veit (Vitus) was named as the titular saint of the church.

All that remains of the medieval church building is the lower part of the tower, which can be dated to the early 13th century. Because of the poor condition of the building, it was completely demolished and rebuilt (1616–1630) according to the plans of Cypriano Biasino, who came from Milan.

From the outside, the church appears to be a strict, early Baroque building, but the interior furnishings date from the 18th century. The work of the Passau sculptor and architect Joseph Matthias Götz (high altar, choir stalls, pulpit) from 1733 and the design of the church with ceiling frescoes were essential. They come from Martin Johann Schmidt (“Kremser Schmidt”) and were created in 1787, while the high altarpiece (1734) comes from Johann Georg Schmidt (“Wiener Schmidt”), an older contemporary, although there is no family connection. The side altar made of black marble in the left transept should be particularly highlighted. It was originally located in the “Bründl Chapel” of the Capuchin monastery Und, which was transferred here when the monastery was abolished in 1796. The small statuette of the Virgin Mary (Bohemian, around 1420) was also installed there, which, as the miraculous image “Maria Bründl”, formed the center of Marian veneration in the Und monastery.

On the north-east side of the church there is a small chapel building that was created in 1739 for the group of figures teaching Anna Maria to read. It is a stone sculpture from the first half of the 14th century, which, as a document of the late Gothic period, is particularly important in the development of art in Krems.
