The 'music pavilion' stands on the edge of the leafy area of Stuttgart's Schlossplatz between the anniversary column and the royal building. When it was built in 1871, the music pavilion, which had previously been built in the Königliche Hüttenwerke Wasseralfingen, stood on the other side of the anniversary column, which was built from 1841 to 1846, facing the New Palace.

The cast-iron octagonal pavilion was probably built by the architect Christian Friedrich von Leins. The city of Stuttgart owes him many buildings, monuments and fountains, some of which are still preserved today. Von Leins was responsible for the design of the royal building, the Schlossplatzspringbrunnen, or, for example, the monument to Eberhard von Etzel.

At that time, pavilions of this type were mostly built for the performance of music concerts. The same goes for the bandstand on Schlossplatz. For many decades, the music pavilion served as the backdrop for the Sunday Schlossplatz promenade concerts. Until 1918 these concerts were directly connected to the elevator of the guard parade at the adjoining castle.

The palace square was redesigned for the 1977 Federal Garden Show. In the course of this redesign, the music pavilion was moved from its original location to the north side of the square, at its current location.

Today the music pavilion is mainly used as a photo opportunity. It is also used by the nearby café in the summer months. Every now and then, smaller music concerts take place in it on Sunday afternoons.
