From the parking lot at the church you can easily walk into the Gorp & Roovert nature reserve.
This St. John's Beheading Church used to be the main church of Goirle and remains so now that the other churches in the village are closed. The church itself is not that old: it dates from 1896-1897, but replaced a building from the fifteenth century. The oldest predecessor dates from the eleventh century.

Goirle also has a modest, but persistent tradition of pilgrimages. The oldest mention dates back to 1610, but the veneration may be much older. After all: the parish was dedicated to Saint John from its inception in the early Middle Ages.

In any case, the tradition was so rooted that the pilgrimages continued, even though Goirle had come under Protestant rule in 1638. Instead of the church of Goirle, a chapel just across the border in Nieuwkerk - indeed, named after the new church - became the purpose of the pilgrimage. There is still an annual hike to Nieuwkerk on Whit Monday. Today this is an ecumenical event: both Catholics and Protestants participate.
