Since the Jewish merchant Hermann Weil wanted to be buried in an urn after a cremation and this is not allowed in a Jewish cemetery, he had this mausoleum built for himself, his wife and his carer while he was still alive. It was inaugurated in September 1927 on the occasion of the Waibstadt home festival. Hermann Weil himself gave the celebratory address and asked to ensure that the square would be kept sacred: "The forecourt of the mausoleum should keep its gates open for all those who love and admire the wonderful nature, associations of homeland care, the art of singing, everyone are welcome here and in their place. I just don't want any political associations allowed, neither from the left nor from the right, neither swastika nor steel helmet nor red front. " Weil died only a month later, and his urn was brought to the mausoleum as requested. The tomb was planned by the Frankfurt architect Alfred Engelhard. The architecture shows parallels to the First Temple in Jerusalem.
On November 10, 1938, the mausoleum was badly damaged in the so-called November pogroms and the three urns disappeared without a trace. The mausoleum fell into disrepair and in 1965 the city of Waibstadt bought the building from the builder's heirs. Between 1980 and 1983 the city of Waibstadt, the Sinsheim Forestry Office and the supporting association of the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park jointly renovated the mausoleum. The exterior was extensively restored in 2011, and the restoration was completed in 2012.
