"... Our small village of Holzen is located in the sunny hills of the Markgräflerland, in the extreme southwest of Germany. Holzen has been part of the city of Kandern since 1974 and has around 600 inhabitants.

The first written mention of Holzen dates back to 1249. However, this year was only found in a copy of the original document. The copy is from January 24, 1475. This document is in the Basel-Stadt State Archives (Istein document no. 11). From 1275 onwards, Holzen was repeatedly listed under the names Holzhain or Holzhein and finally from 1430 as Holzheim and 1493 as Holtzheim. The current name Holzen is consistently used in documents after 1765. However, there is certainly the possibility that Holzen is significantly older than 1249. Stone axes from the Stone Age have been found in some places, such as the Outer Sausenhard, Bühl and Fehrbachsbuck, which indicate an early settlement. There is also the assumption that there was already a settlement here in Celtic times, as the Celts began mining ores in Behlen and the mining sites are only not far from today's Holzen. It is also possible that the Romans, who probably also carried out mining in Behlen, were here. The Steinacker on Gupfer Weg is likely to be a reminder of this time, as Gupf is said to have been a Roman dairy farm. The road from Kandern via Hammerstein, which leads past the Einig, was also built by the Romans. ..."
