The Sorgwohld inland dunes were formed at the end of the late ice age around 12,000 years ago, when sand from the Owschlager Sanders was blown together by strong icy winds to form mighty dunes. Today, we can enjoy the heather that characterizes the area in the middle of the sand dunes.
Tip: Plan your visit when the heather is in bloom from August 8th to September 9th.

The dune is worth a detour. The heather is of course a special eye-catcher when it blooms around the end of August and is particularly beautiful, but the mosses and lichens are also great to look at at all other times of the year.
