The central region of the Brecon Beacons, which reaches its highest point on Pen y Fan, is an astonishing landscape of great wedge-shaped mountains forged from beautiful red sandstone. Hikes to Fan Fawr take you to the highest point on the massif to the west of the main chain, separated by a valley that marks the very beginnings of the emblematic River Taff.

Fan Fawr is one of the great peaks of the Brecon Beacons. At 734 m, it doesn't achieve the lofty heights of its neighbours across the valley, but it complements them very well with grand views, and it is far less busy over on this side. The peak is marked by a cairn, but the trig point is 400m SW at Gilfach Wen top, which is slightly lower. The climb up from Storey Arms is a cracking workout, but you are rewarded with great views. If you want to make a great day of it, include it in a loop that takes in the four nuttalls of Craig Cerrig Gleisiad (629 m), Fan Frynych (629 m), Fan Llia (632 m), and Fan Fawr itself. Get there closer to sunset especially on a clear day for amazing views, set up camp and pack just before sunrise to head down to the car park which is just minutes away.

Fan Fawr is a mountain in the Fforest Fawr section of the Brecon Beacons National Park, in Powys, Wales and over 734 m high. The summit overlooks the steep eastern face and is marked by a cairn. Unusually, the trig point on this hill does not sit at the summit but 600 m to the south-west on a subsidiary spur. Called Gilfach-Wen 718m)

Nice little hill, way up can be a bit all over the place if it's muddy. Nice views off to the East.
