A beautiful place. For this you should take two to three hours time. Great and colorful building fabric. Great arcades and alleys. Cafes and restaurants, just great. And if you have enough time, go up to the mountain or to the opposite side and look again at the old town from above.

Wasserburg a.Inn surprises with its unique location. The city in the north of the Chiemsee Alps lies on a peninsula. Magnificent, colorful patrician houses with their arcades, the castle that was built in the 12th century, winding streets, selected shops and small cafés invite you to stroll and linger. Wasserburg am Inn (officially Wasserburg a.Inn) is a town in the Upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim. It lies about 55 km east of the state capital Munich and about 25 km north of the district town of Rosenheim. It was the seat of the district court of Wasserburg a.Inn, from which the district court of Wasserburg am Inn and the district office, which later became the district office of Wasserburg a.Inn, emerged.

Modernity

Until the regional reform in Bavaria in 1972, Wasserburg am Inn was the district town of the Wasserburg am Inn district; since then the town has belonged to the Rosenheim district. As part of the regional reform, the communities of Attel (with Reitmehring) and Edling were incorporated on May 1, 1978. On April 29, 1981, Edling was separated from the town and became an independent community in the Rosenheim district again.

Between 1980 and 2002, numerous major projects were implemented as part of the urban redevelopment: construction of a bypass road, sewage treatment plant, expansion of the sewer system, construction of the two free parking garages, city archives, construction of the Münchner Straße connecting ramp and numerous building and street renovations in the old town.

Middle Ages

In addition to Bronze Age finds, archaeological findings on the edge of the medieval town reveal the remains of an area with a burial site enclosed by a tuff wall from the middle of the 9th century. The wall, which obviously collapsed later, shows signs of fire; the settlement had been abandoned, at least in the excavated area. A skeleton known as "Fletzi" from this period was also found.

Wasserburg is first mentioned in a document dated between 1085 and 1088, a copy of which has been preserved in a tradition book of the St. Emmeram monastery in Regensburg. Since it already mentions a "Dietrich von Wasserburg", the process that was long seen as the founding of the town - that of Hallgrave Engelbert moving his ancestral seat from Limburg Castle to his "Wasserburg" in the middle of the 12th century - must be doubted. The corresponding document has now also been identified as a forgery.

Modern times

Some authors of the early modern period believe that they can identify an ancient site called Hohodunum or Hobodunum with Wasserburg or a nearby site. No ancient source is given; this is probably a misinterpretation of the Rhobodunum mentioned by Ptolemy, which modern archaeological research is looking for much further east (Moravia, Lower Austria, etc.).

On January 24, 1552, the elephant Soliman, a gift from John of Spain to Maximilian II, traveled through the town of Wasserburg.

During the Thirty Years' War, Munich was occupied by the Swedes, who reached the Inn around 1632. The inhabitants of the left bank therefore fled, often accompanied by their livestock, to the right bank of the river, where the towns had to accommodate many refugees. In addition, imperial and Bavarian soldiers were stationed there, which caused resistance among the population.
