The Dreisam was canalized along its entire length from Kirchzarten to Riegel from 1817 to 1842 under the direction of Johann Gottfried Tulla. In the east of Freiburg, however, it was renatured over a length of 800 m at the beginning of the 21st century. Four years later, in 2019, the state water body installed granite blocks weighing tons below the Ottiliensteg, which act as groynes and direct the current into the side arm. However, the floods in 2021 deposited so much gravel that the tributary above the sand trap bridge falls dry when the water is low. Therefore, in September, 500 cubic meters of gravel were dredged “as carefully as possible” for 15,000 euros. Before the canalization, the Dreisam flowed further west along the eastern edge of the Kaiserstuhl to the north. Near Eichstetten, the Eichstetter Mühlbach flowed into it, which today is canalized and follows the former bed of the Dreisam and flows into the Elz northeast of the St. Michaelsberg (241 m above sea level) as Alte Dreisam at the same point as the Dreisam. Against the background of the river's history, the Alte Dreisam is still treated as a tributary of the Dreisam. The Dreisam has an average water flow of 10.9 m³/s at its mouth, without the Alte Dreisam it has an average water flow of 8.6 m³/s.

The Dreisam has a total gradient of 199 meters between Kirchzarten (377 m) and its mouth (178 m) into the Elz.
