The Vleeshuis is a historic building on the Grote Markt in the Belgian city of Dendermonde. The Vleeshuis was built between 1460 and 1462 on the same site of an earlier building from 1293. The hall for the local butchers was located on the ground floor. The Vleeshuis has been used as a meat and cloth hall, aldermen's house, four scissors, prison, guild room, theater and guardroom. In 1862 the last 'meat banks' disappeared and it became a covered vegetable market. At the end of the 19th century, the building was thoroughly restored by Edouard Bouwens. Since 1899, the Vleeshuis has functioned as an antiquities museum, with archaeological finds, old documents, a collection of hand- and firearms, a mammoth skeleton and elements from earlier Ros Beiaardommebanen. On the other side of the market square, the Vleeshuis boasts an octagonal tower from the 15th century. You can learn everything about the oldest history of Dendermonde in the Vleeshuis Museum on the Grote Markt. A real mammoth, archaeological finds, old documents, a collection of small arms and firearms, elements from the former Ros Beiaardommebanen… you'll find it all there!

The current Vleeshuis was built between 1460 and 1462 on the same site as its predecessor from 1293. On the ground floor was the hall for the local butchers, who were only allowed to sell their meat products here to private individuals.

Over the centuries, the Vleeshuis has served as a meat and cloth hall, aldermen's house, four scissors, prison, guild room, theater and guardroom. In 1862 the last 'meat banks' disappeared and the space was transformed into a covered vegetable market. At the end of the 19th century, the building was thoroughly restored by Edouard Bouwens. Since 1899, the Vleeshuis has functioned as an archaeological museum. In 1914 it narrowly escaped a fire and in 1943 it was protected as a monument.

In the current Vleeshuis Museum, visitors walk through the history of Dendermonde, with prehistory as the starting point and the end of the ancien régime.

In the attic you come face to face with the biggest eye-catcher: the approximately 28,000-year-old, almost intact skeleton of a mammoth! This 'oldest inhabitant' was found during sand extraction in the Sint-Onolfspolder in 1968.

A second exceptional archaeological find was the wooden 'ship's head' that dates from the 4th to 6th century. The original, dredged from the Scheldt near Appels in 1934, is in the British Museum in London. This find is still very controversial. Is it a ship's head or a piece of furniture? Is it of Saxon or Merovingian origin? The experts still disagree!

Finds from the metal ages and the Roman period are also discussed. The accidental discovery of a Merovingian grave field on the Zwijvekekouter completes this room with an extensive collection of grave goods: beautiful belt fittings, glass beads and cloak pins.

On the first floor, we immerse ourselves in medieval urban development, everyday life and the economy. The military past of Dendermonde and its important function as a regional market center are outlined.
