The Ertbrandbos, which houses the Fort of Ertbrand, is a 90-hectare nature reserve in a remote corner of Kapellen. The area forms the ecological connection between the forest areas of Brasschaat, Kapellen and the Kalmthoutse Heide Border Park. The forest is not only important for the conservation of plants and animals in our urban environment, but also fulfills an indispensable role as a walking and nature experience area.
Via the two walking loops you will discover some unique pieces of nature and military heritage. Be guided along the ring moat of the Fort van Ertbrand and catch a glimpse of the damaged but still imposing military structure. You can explore the forest along impressive avenues and adventurous paths, in search of roe deer or pine marten. You might even see a bat skim past the trunks!

Fort info: Construction began in 1906 and was completed in 1912 to defend the Antwerp Defence Line during World War I.
After World War II, the fort was used by the Belgian Bomb Disposal Service. Now, Natuurpunt is the proud owner, allowing bats to roost undisturbed. The fort now serves as a large wintering roost for these small, winged creatures. The fort can only be visited three times during the summer with a guide by appointment.
