The Wissower Klinken was a chalk formation in the Jasmund National Park on the island of Rügen and for a long time one of the most attractive tourist spots on the island.
On February 24, 2005, the two main battlements, which were up to 20 meters high, slid into the sea. Around 50,000 cubic meters of chalk were torn into the Baltic Sea, leaving little of the original formation. In addition to the sea surf, which constantly shapes the coastline, the cause was the pressure of ice-age deposits from the interior of the country. Frozen rainwater then blasted off the rock masses after the onset of thaw. The demolition was expected after six cracks had been discovered a year earlier. One of these cracks had widened some time before and around 1000 cubic meters of chalk fell into the sea a week before the major demolition. [1] On the evening of July 27, 2010 there was another violent chalk demolition, in which around 150 tons of earth fell onto the beach.
