The Lake of Tears in Leipzig is an artificial pool in front of the Leipzig Monument to the Battle of the Nations, probably the most famous sight in Leipzig. The lake symbolizes the tears of the peoples who mourned the victims of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in October 1813. More than 120,000 soldiers died in the battle that broke Napoleon's tyranny over Europe.

In front of the memorial there is a 162 by 79 meter large pool of water, which was renamed "Lake of Tears for the Fallen Soldiers" by the National Socialists in 1938. It is meant to symbolize the tears of the people mourning those who died in the battle. This name is still used in Leipzig's vernacular.

The large 180m long and 80m wide water basin at the foot of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig symbolizes the tears that were shed during the great battle - the "Lake of Tears". If you stand directly in front of the Lake of Tears, the Leipzig Monument to the Battle of the Nations is reflected in it.

When the sun is shining and the lake is calm, you can make great mirror images of the monument.

Even when frozen, the Lake of Tears is very impressive and beautiful to look at with the Battle of the Nations Monument in the background 🤗.

The 91 meter high memorial is the largest national monument in Germany. It was built between 1897 and 1913 and inaugurated on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig. In 2013, the 200th anniversary was celebrated with great celebrations. Extensive reconstruction work was carried out in advance.

In contrast to the serious background, a well-known, much-attended bathtub race was held for more than 20 years on the Lake of Tears in front of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations. (Source: seen.de/see-der-traenen/)

The Monument to the Nations is both one of the most important and impressive memorials to the Battle of the Nations.

The imposing War Memorial of Europe was completed in 1913 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Noederlage of France's Emperor Napoleon in the Greatest Battle of the Nations (in 1813).

Attached to the memorial is a museum about the Battle of the Nations, the FORUM 1813. Many exhibits of equipment and the life of the soldiers are shown here.

The Monument to the Battle of the Nations commemorates the first major mass battle in human history. More than half a million soldiers from almost all of Europe faced each other on the battlefields around Leipzig in October 1813. More than 110,000 people lost their lives from starvation and disease during the bloody battles or afterwards. The Monument to the Battle of the Nations was built between 1898 and 1913 thanks to the great commitment of the citizens and was inaugurated on October 18, 1913.

Visitors, weather and war had left their mark on the monument for almost 100 years. In the 1990s, consideration was given to allowing the monument to “decay in a controlled manner”. Therefore, on October 9, 1998, 29 Leipzig citizens founded the Völkerschlachtdenkmal e. V. The statutory purpose of the association is the preservation and comprehensive renovation of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations. The association has almost 300 members: citizens, companies, institutions, associations. Like the Patriotenbund, they are committed to the restoration of the monument with civic commitment. We regard this memorial not only as a place of remembrance for the dead of the Battle of the Nations, but also as a memorial for peace, freedom, international understanding and European unity.
In October 2013 the body of the monument was renovated. However, the outdoor facilities have only been partially repaired.
From 2012 to 2018 it was presented for the water basin, in 2019 and 2020 for the lime tree steps in the upper gallery in the Lindenallee. The main staircase, pool and linden stairs have been renewed (see "Completed projects"). (Source: voelkerschlachtdenkmal.de; Förderverein Völkerschlachdenkmal e.V.)
