    The Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida created a monument from 343 m3 of concrete in one cast. The sculpture is 15.2 m high and has a cross-section of 10 m2.

    The sculpture is a link between the rocket station and Hombroich Island.

      The sculpture is the fifth in Chillida's series of "Begirari" (all written with two r's) and aims to surpass the previous ones. At 15 meters high, it does just that, even if it is not quite as high as the wind turbines and power station chimneys... In any case, it is useful for orientation in the vast landscape. If you come on foot from Holzheim, you have to walk straight towards it.

        These works by Chillida are inspired by the verse "Lo profundo es el aire" ('the profound is the air') by the Spanish poet Jorge Guillén (1893 - 1984), to whom Chillida dedicated several homages. Two steel steles not dissimilar to Begirari V are called Lo profundo es el aire (1988) and La casa del poeta ('The House of the Poet') (1991). Thus Begirari V could be understood as a castle in the air of the spirit, of the non-material. As a homage to the human spirit (and its responsibility?) per se..."
