Kybfelsen Castle or Kyburg is the name given to the minimal remains of an earlier castle or defense system that was located south of the Kybfelsen mountain peak on a rock massif of the same name. The remote location at around 820 meters above sea level on this rock massif between Günterstal and Kappel is now a popular excursion destination, with a great view of the Breisgau Bay and Günterstal.
Almost nothing is known about the origins of the castle and its end. A written mention comes from the chronicle of Matthias von Neuchâtel from the 14th century, where it is already shown as a ruin. A district plan from the 18th century still shows considerable rubble. The first excavations took place in the 1920s, where finds from the 12th and 13th centuries were discovered. It is concluded that the castle was probably abandoned at the end of the 13th century. Possible residents include relatives of the Counts of Kyburg, a noble family whose main power was in what is now northern and eastern Switzerland. However, it is more likely that it is a coincidental similarity of names.

The castle on the Kybfelsen is a former spur castle in the area of the independent city of Freiburg im Breisgau in Baden-Württemberg.

A spur castle on the Kybfelsen is mentioned in the chronicle of Matthias von Neuenburg from the middle of the 14th century. The name "Kyburg" first appeared in 1484 in the Wisdom of Kappel. Finds brought from excavations at the castle site, in the 1920s by O. Kantorowicz, prove the existence of the complex during the time of the Zähringer rule in Breisgau in the late 11th and early 12th centuries. Ceramics finds dating back to the 12th and early 13th centuries complete the view of the period of use of the fortified square. More recent surface finds also point to an early, at least temporary, Bronze Age settlement of the rock. There is no reliable information on the question of the exact time of foundation and the builder or owner of the castle. A connection with the Counts of Kyburg, whose rulers were in today's northern and eastern Switzerland, is considered questionable today. The end of the castle is believed to have been found in the first half of the 13th century due to the existing finds.

Here are two more rocks from the remains of the castle ruins in the eastern part.
After a little climbing, there is a distant view towards Kappel and St. Wilhelm.
Best in winter, when the view is fairly clear when there is little foliage.

The ascent to the Kybfelsen leads after a few meters away from the hustle and bustle of the big city through a beautiful mixed forest, which welcomes us in new colors in every season. Again and again, beautiful viewpoints invite you to linger and offer intoxicating views over Freiburg and the surrounding area. The Kybfelsen rises prominently from the forest landscape. The paths seem almost alpine. And all of this is only a few kilometers away from Freiburg.
