The Semois (Walloon: Simwès, in France: Semoy, outdated German: Sesbach) is a right tributary of the Meuse.

The river originates in Belgian Lorraine and flows into the Meuse on French territory. The river is 190 km long, of which 20 kilometers are in French territory, where the river's name is spelled Semoy. In Belgium it flows largely through the province of Luxembourg, the rest in the extreme southeast of Namur (through the Forest of the Semois and the Houille). It therefore forms the southern border of the Ardennes. The catchment area measures 1329 km², of which 1229 km² is in Belgium.

The Semois rises in Arlon, where the source was uncovered in 1966 and can be visited. It flows in a westerly direction, parallel to the national border, which is crossed past Bohan. During most of its course, from Chiny to the mouth, the river meanders strongly. The distance from the source to the mouth is only 70 km as the crow flies, but the total length of the river is almost three times that due to the many meanders.

The material into which the Semois cuts is mainly slate. This metamorphic rock was originally clay that was deposited in the Middle Siegenian (Early Devonian).

The most famous place on the Semois is the medieval town of Bouillon with its castle. Downstream you can see the traces of tobacco cultivation that characterized the Semois valley until the mid-20th century and to which a museum is dedicated in Vresse.

The mouth of the Meuse is located just north of Monthermé in the Ardennes department.

The Semois is popular with anglers who catch barbel, nape (fish), chub and pike.

The pontoon bridges over the Semois are installed around April/May each year and disappear around September/October. Useful to know when planning your walk whether the bridges are available or not.
