If you want to visit the monastery should be time name. All sorts of information boards (also in English) tell the story of the monastery, which is interwoven with the history of the Doria family. Yes, that with the Andrea Doria ;-)

If you arrive too late and, in addition to being lucky, also have sufficient knowledge of Italian, you can convince one or the other fisherman to be taken back to Camogli by boat. For a corresponding fee, of course. Definitely worth it when the sun is setting!

Actually an enchanted place, but unfortunately destroyed by too much tourism. So a monastery becomes a Disneyland. Fortunately, there are wonderful places like the agro-tourism farm in the immediate vicinity, but for half an hour brave up the steep mountain trails ... which I absolutely recommend. Or an hour up to the springs.

San Fruttuoso is just absurdly beautiful, you have to see this place with your own eyes. The old monastery with a pebble beach on a blue-green lagoon can only be reached on foot or by boat. I definitely recommend the footpath, because it is breathtakingly beautiful in itself.

In low season, if San Fruttuoso is the destination of your trek with the aim of returning to Camogli or Portofino by boat, it is better not to arrive too late because at a certain time the ferries cease their service with a consequent crowd for the last tickets, high season this problem does not exist but there is a great crowd in the place at any time.

A medium-easy walk (the difference in altitude from Portofino is challenging because it is quite concentrated in a couple of km, but at your own pace and without haste, more or less anyone can do it). Spectacular views and beautiful places. Truly very pleasant.

I would like to point out that the possibility of fully perceiving the beauty of these places depends greatly on the time of year, in fact, both locations suffer from the phenomenon of “overtourism”, where a mass of people pour into a fragile territory, born from a completely different culture, preventing one from grasping the essence of the places. Having said that, arriving on foot, for those with a minimum of training, is magnificent.

The Abbey of San Fruttuoso is situated in a beautiful bay between Camogli and Portofino.

The abbey was founded by the Order of Saint Benedict and dates from the 10th and 11th centuries. It contains the tombs of members of the noble Doria family from Genoa, and the building was occupied between 1275 and 1305. The Doria tombs feature black and white stripes, typical of Ligurian architecture of that period.

Above the abbey stands the Doria watchtower, built in 1562 by the family of Admiral Andrea Doria and used to defend the freshwater springs surrounding the palace from pirates.

Admission to the abbey costs €9.00 (free for FAI members).

Since 1954, a bronze statue of Christ has stood in the sea stretching out in front of the abbey, at a depth of over fifteen meters. The statue was placed there at the request of divers who lost one of their diving colleagues at this very spot. Even underwater, Jesus, who stands approximately five meters tall, reaches heavenward with his arms. The statue is over two meters tall and is a popular attraction for divers. If you don't want to venture underwater, you can admire a replica of the statue of Christ in San Fruttuoso.
