At the end of the 18th century, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, who was also Duchess of Luxembourg, had the country surveyed by engineers and cartographers. Here, on the border between the properties of Echternach Abbey and the County of Vianden, a boundary stone has been set in place of a cross that had marked the border for centuries. The massive, square stone, more than a meter high and 80 cm wide, bears the name of the esteemed landlady, "Maria-Theresien-Stein". The east side of the landmark shows the coat of arms of the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation", the double-headed eagle. This shows that the Echternach Abbey was an imperial abbey that was directly subordinate to the emperor. The year of construction, 1771, is carved over the coat of arms. The coat of arms of the Counts of Vianden can be seen on the west side of the stone. The two crosses on the sides date from the Prussian period (1816). The border ran from Maria-Theresien-Stein in a westerly direction through a deeply cut valley that is popularly known as “Moarkendell” - “Grenzsteintal”. The historical boundary stone, which marks the border between Viandener property and that of the Echternach Abbey, was erected in 1771 instead of a wooden cross. The border stone got its name from Empress Maria-Theresia, who was also the duchess of Luxembourg, which was then part of Austria.
