The architect Wilhelm Kreis designed a number of event buildings for the Düsseldorf Ehrenhof in 1925. This included the "Rheinhalle" with a planetarium and surrounding museums. The reason was the lack of space for exhibitions and events. The Rheinhalle - today's Tonhalle - was built on the neoclassical model. The foyer was considered one of the most important interiors of Expressionism. Kreis, which received "great honors" in the subsequent National Socialist era, had a decisive influence on the urban architecture of Düsseldorf at that time.

The planetarium soon lost its novelty and the flow of visitors decreased. The Rheinhalle became more and more a multi-purpose venue. During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged by an explosive bomb on the night of July 31st to August 1st, 1942. Fortunately, it was not demolished. The "old Tonhalle" (on Tonhallenstrasse, now the Karstadt department store), on the other hand, was completely destroyed in the Pentecostal attack in 1943. In 1944 the orchestra was disbanded and the musicians were sent to operations that were important to the war effort. But already in July 1945 the concert business was resumed with 45 musicians. The ruins of the planetarium were makeshiftly turned into an event location, and the first major event took place in August 1948. At the beginning of the 1950s, the Rheinhalle was then rebuilt more thoroughly and again received a reasonable event space. But it would take more than 25 years until the "new" Tonhalle became a serious center for concert music.

"... Originally, the architect Wilhelm Kreis, who also designed the adjacent courtyard in 1925, built the Tonhalle (formerly Rheinhalle) as a planetarium.

But around 50 years after its opening in 1926, the neoclassical rotunda was given a new use: it became a concert hall. International stars of all genres, from classical to jazz, from chanson to soul, from piano to cabaret, have since come together under the imposing dome. In 2005 the hall was modernized and the acoustics improved. Not only the 130 members of the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, who are musically at home in the Tonhalle, enjoy this, but also the more than 300,000 culture fans who attend the 450 events every year. ... The Tonhalle has been the musical landmark of the state capital Düsseldorf for over 25 years. The concert hall, which was built directly on the banks of the Rhine in 1926 and remained largely intact during the war, was converted into today's concert hall in 1978.
