The Schwennigke (also Schwenke) is a left-sided natural inflow of Schnauder. It rises in Gleinaer Grund [1] and runs from Tröglitz on a distance of about 25 km through the Elsteraue parallel to the White Elster, before it opens at Audigast in the Schnauder. This in turn empties a few hundred meters into the White Elster. From 1888, the Schwennigke's water was made available to the surrounding communities as drinking water via a specially constructed pipeline. As a result of lignite mining, the groundwater level of the region dropped increasingly from 1908, and consequently the Schwennigke produced less water each year. To stabilize the supply, a waterworks was put into operation from 1932, which collected water from seven spring and collecting shafts in a high tank. This system was discontinued in the year 2000 by the MIDEWA Zeitz, plants and elevated tanks were demolished. As a result, the status of the protection zone was removed from the source area.

☆ Good way to avoid the federal highway. Until the end of Audigaster Straße, turn right on the other side of the street. Continue on the single trail for about 1.5 - 2 km in the direction of Audigast. The route is sometimes very narrow, especially with some bridges.
