          Pegau was first mentioned in 1096 in connection with the founding of the Pegauer monastery by Wiprecht von Groitzsch. The cenotaph of Margrave Wiprecht von Groitzsch, who died in 1124 adversary of Pope Gregory VII, lies in the church Pegauer. A monk from the monastery Pegau wrote in 1155 with the writing "Annales Pegaviensis", the Pegauer Annalen, an important medieval historiography. Pegau was hit by witch hunt in 1604-1605. One person went into a witch trial. In 1740, the Prussian King Frederick the Great visited Pegau. Emperor Napoleon, Tsar Alexander I and the Emperor of Austria Franz I. stayed overnight in Pegau in 1813.

            The town hall was built from 1559 to 1561 by the Leipzig architect Paul Wiedemann to plans by the famous Renaissance architect Hieronymus Lotter. At the end of the Thirty Years' War (1644) destroyed to the outer walls and again badly damaged in a city fire in 1670, it was rebuilt in its present form. In the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, the interior of the building was redesigned several times to adapt it to the respective requirements. In 1992, the town hall was thoroughly renovated.
