Kakesbeck Castle is the oldest of three preserved moated castles in Lüdinghausen. It is located five kilometers north of the city center in the Elvert peasantry. The outside visit is possible at any time, a visit of the castle complex from the inside must be announced in advance.

Kakesbeck Castle is the oldest of the three moated castles in Lüdinghausen surrounded by Steverwasser and was already mentioned in the 9th century as the fortified courtyard of the von Kakesbekii.

In 1322, Bernhard de Droste from Vischering Castle expanded the courtyard into a two-island castle. For this purpose, the water of the Stever was diverted and also used for an oil mill. At its heyday, the castle complex, which covered almost one square kilometer, had five (!) outlying castles. There was a 30 meter high defense tower and three residential towers. Kakesbeck, which has almost been forgotten today and is off the beaten tourist track, was once one of the largest and most outstanding medieval castles in all of Europe.

During his lifetime, the castle owner Wilfried Grewing campaigned for the preservation of the castle. Today the Dr. Wilfried and Hildegard Grewing Foundation the property.
