The House of the Blackheads was built in 1334 as a place for meetings and celebrations of various social organizations in Riga. The Second World War reduced the House of the Blackheads to rubble and it was restored in 1999.

The highlight of a tour of the old town is certainly Rathausplatz. The buildings around are an absolute highlight. Of course, the House of the Blackheads of the former German citizenship of Riga stands out.

A House of the Blackheads is the meetinghouse of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads, an association of unmarried merchants in the Hanseatic Cities of the Baltic States. The name derives from the Holy Mauritius from, the always dark-skinned patron saint of the Brotherhood. This brotherhood existed only in Old Livonia, in today's Estonia and Latvia. After joining the guild, the career often brought the most successful merchants to the City Council.
The most well-known house of the blackheads is rebuilt since 1999 faithfully, on the town hall square of Riga.
