The Stellerburg is a former early medieval Ringwallanlage in Weddingstedt in the district Dithmarschen in Schleswig-Holstein.

The facility is the northernmost defense of Saxony and should serve as a strategic location for defense against the Vikings, as it had to be passed by the conquerors from the north. To the east of the trail were extensive marshland, marshland swampy and often flooded in the west.

The Saxon plant dates from the time before the conquest by Charlemagne.

The ringwall was made of wood, earth and wall. Extensive excavation work by the Kiel Museum of Prehistoric Antiquities in the years 1932/1933 promoted a screed path in the castle as well as the floor plans of 20 wooden houses. Probably the system was only used temporarily, at least indicates the small number of small finds.

The Stellerburg is a ring wall from the time before the conquest by Charlemagne.

It is considered to be the northernmost ring wall castle of the Saxon type. Similar to the Bökelburg in Burg and the presumed former castle in Meldorf, it served to secure the incursion routes from the sea at a time when all of Europe was suffering from invasions by seafaring people like the Vikings.

The Stellerburg was built a few decades before the conquest of northern Saxony by Charlemagne (804). It existed until the 10th century. A bypassing this point between the wet, unconscious marshland in the west and the lowland moors in the east was difficult at the time.

The excavations could not only prove the way into the castle, which led as a preserved wooden plank path from the north gate to the east gate, but also a number of small wooden houses, mostly built in carefully timbered plank and rod construction.

The rampart, which was expanded several times, was built from sod. The supposed wooden parapet of the wall should have led over the gates. The castle was probably only occupied when necessary, as the number of small finds was lower than one would expect if there was permanent settlement.

Ring wall castles are defensive structures from prehistoric times (approx. 700-1000 AD) and consist of a single or multi-gate earth wall that was previously fortified by wooden structures. Use as a refuge is possible. A tower hill castle is a medieval castle complex (here 12th century, otherwise until around 1400). Its center is an initially mostly wooden tower on a heaped hill, which was surrounded by one or more ditches.
