A wooden church stood on the site of today's Church of the Holy Cross until 1693, but it collapsed in a fire. Elector Frederick III, who regularly stayed at his palace in Wusterhausen, subsequently commissioned the construction of a stone church. Over the years, the church was expanded several times.
It underwent its most significant reconstruction at the beginning of the 19th century, when the original wooden tower was replaced by the striking octagonal tower. The restored paintings in the interior are also particularly worth seeing.

Up until 1693 there was a wooden church at the current location of the cruciform church. With the collapse of the old church in today's Niederlehme district, Elector Friedrich III. the order to build a large patronage church in Königs Wusterhausen on the site of the wooden church. In 1697 the new church was built as a rectangular, plastered brick hall on the eastern edge of the old village green as a replacement for the wooden churches in Wusterhausen, Niederlehme and Hoherlehme. Two crypts were dug under the church for princely servants and wealthy residents.
