The Evangelical City Church, situated on a hill, slightly off the medieval market square, with its towering tower, forms a striking landmark of the old town. It was built in the 14th century and later rebuilt several times (1511, 1732-1738, 1882-1885). In the course of the Reformation, the church became Protestant in 1529. (Wikipedia)

The origins of the Roth town church are obscure. Although the first documented mention of the place "Rot" in a document from Bishop Gundekar II of Eichstätt in 1060 mentions a church consecration, it cannot be determined whether this is identical to today's town church. The mention of a bell in the church "Beatae Mariae Virginis", on the other hand, most likely refers to the building on today's church square, the highest point in the city at that time. The nave received its current shape as part of a major expansion in the years 1508-1511. The Gothic tower is retained, as is the vaulted choir. The work is under the direction of the Margrave's master builder Endres Embhardd.J. from Ansbach. The year of consecration can still be seen carved above the northern side entrance.

In Roth's greatest fire disaster in 1878, the church tower burned out completely. It is replaced by a new one, completed in 1885. In 1977 a major interior renovation took place. Numerous crypts are discovered; Until the cemetery was relocated at the beginning of the 17th century, the church was surrounded by the "cemetery", the burial place of those who died in Roth. The tombstones and epitaphs from that time that were found will be displayed visibly and the crypts will be closed again. The exterior facade will also be renovated later. The outer staircases to the galleries will be demolished. The entire project was completed in 1985. The most recent interior renovation and a new roof took place in 2010/2011.

The medieval hall church, built between 1508 and 1510, was remodeled in the Margrave style between 1732 and 1738 based on a design by Johann David Steingruber. The exterior of the nave, made of ashlar masonry with the buttresses and roofs of the portals, and the lower floors of the choir tower were preserved. After a fire in 1878, the choir tower was rebuilt over the neo-Gothic square choir.
