      The Ruggeller Riet, a peatland, is a nature reserve of around 90 hectares in the very north of Liechtenstein. The fauna and especially the flora offer nature lovers a wonderful natural experience.

      Low moors, ponds, hedges, trees and meadows offer an ideal habitat for many endangered animals and plants. Even the stork has moved back in. Another attraction is the blooming of the Siberian iris at the end of May and beginning of June: large areas are transformed into a blue carpet.

      The outlet of the inland canal into the Rhine has been renaturalized, and there is a barbecue area in the wine-growing area at the mouth of the canal. The Rhine with its gravel banks and the Rhine dam offer peace and relaxation, whether for walking, cycling or inline skating. There is also a connection to the cycle path networks of Austria and Switzerland.

        In 1978, the government of the Principality of Liechtenstein placed an area of 93.4 hectares in the Ruggeller and Schellenberger Rietes under nature protection. It is the largest of a total of eleven Liechtenstein nature reserves. There are three other nature conservation areas in the vicinity: Spiral, Au and Haslermahd. On the Vorarlberg side there is a protection zone of 63 hectares, of which 8.7 hectares are strictly protected. The extensive research work and the efforts to place it under protection are mainly thanks to the Liechtenstein-Sargans-Werdenberg Botanical-Zoological Society, which was founded in 1970.
