Upper Castle, Schellenberg
The Upper Castle of Schellenberg and the Lower Castle of Schellenberg are located on the Eschnerberg ridge in the municipality of Schellenberg. They are named after the Lords of Schellenberg, who had them built starting at the end of the 12th century to secure the thoroughfare leading to Italy. In 1317, Marquard von Schellenberg sold the castles, along with their lordship rights, to the Counts of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg. They were succeeded as owners by Count Wilhelm von Montfort-Tettnang in 1412, the Barons of Brandis in 1437, the Counts of Sulz in 1507, the Counts of Hohenems in 1613, the Princely House of Liechtenstein in 1699, and the Historical Society for the Principality of Liechtenstein in 1956.
At the beginning of the 16th century, at least one of the castles was likely still intact, as Ludwig von Brandis pledged in 1505 to keep an unspecified Schellenberg Castle open to the House of Austria in the event of war. In 1616, the "Ems Chronicle" described them as "broken."
The Upper Castle was originally called Old (Castle) Schellenberg, and the Lower Castle New (Castle) Schellenberg, which is correct according to archaeological findings. In the 18th century, the terms "old" and "new" for the two castles were reversed. Only archaeological excavations were able to clarify this error. Today, the auxiliary terms "Upper Castle Schellenberg" and "Lower Castle Schellenberg" coined by Jakob Bill have prevailed.

There are two castle ruins in Schellenberg, with the so-called Upper Castle being a very popular tourist destination and only a short walk away. The upper and larger complex in the Hinterschloss district of Schellenberg was built from 1200 onwards and already had all the important elements of a medieval castle. Both ruins can be visited free of charge.
