The area is an approximately 10 hectare nature reserve. The nature reserve is one of the few moors in Middle Franconia. On a small scale, open water surfaces and silting communities alternate here.
The moor is a particularly valuable silted-up complex of near-natural ponds with floating leaf and underwater vegetation, is home to rare and endangered plant species such as snakeroot, marsh rag fern and other red-listed species of the swamp forests, reed beds and large sedge reeds, the extensive willow bushes and old alder swamp forests. The occurrence of the marsh calla lily and the grass snake should be emphasized. 16 dragonfly species have been identified. The peat soils are up to one meter thick.
