"Since Erft flooded frequently in earlier years, the Erft reservoir between Schönau and Eicherscheid was erected by the Erftverband in the early 1970s." It is terrific, which effort was operated here.

The retention basin, located about 3 km south of Bad Münstereifel, protects the towns of Bad Münstereifel and Euskirchen. The dam was planned by the Great Erft Association. It creates a storage capacity of around 900,000 m³. This is enough to absorb the flood expected once in 100 years. The maximum amount that can be released from the basin is 7 m³/s. This reduces a maximum flood inflow to the basin of up to 42 m³/s by around 35 m³/s.
So that the basin is available with all of its storage capacity in the event of a flood, only 30,000 m³ of the 900,000 m³ of storage space are filled during permanent damming. The small water surface is constantly dammed for operational reasons. Source: Wikipedia
