The ruins of the temple of Antas are remarkable. It is a Punico-Roman temple dedicated to the worship of the eponymous Sardinian god Sid Babay Addir. It was built by the Carthaginians then the Romans took it over for themselves, attracted by the region's rich deposits of lead and iron. Behind the temple the archaeological site continues with a necropolis that can be visited. The price of the visit is 4 euros and it can be done every day of the week between 9:30 am and 7:00 pm.

The Temple of Antas was discovered in the 19th century; but, soon plundered and partially destroyed, was finally restored in the 60s.

It was born as a Punic temple, in honor of the Carthaginian divinity Sid Babay Addir, on a pre-existing sacred nuragic area.

The original structure was built entirely with local limestone by the Carthaginians in the sixth century BC. During the Roman domination, it was reconstructed by the Emperor Augustus and finally restored by Caracalla in the third century A.D.

It stands on a podium, about one meter high on the ground, preceded by three steps.

In its present form it has a porch, the pronaos, bounded frontally by four columns of about 8 meters, with Ionic capitals, and two further columns on the sides.

From here the only priests could have access to a deep rectangular cell where the bronze statue of the god was venerated. Even though there is only one finger left today, its proportions show that the statue had an original height of over three meters.

The Roman inscription on the architrave above the columns, "... TEMPL(um) DEI SARDI PATRIS BAB…" shows the name of the deity: the god called by the Romans SARDUS PATER and just identifiable with the Carthaginian deity Sid Babay.

Following the provincial road from Fluminimaggiore to Iglesias, after 8 km there is a detour on left that leads to the archaeological area, which - besides the temple - also contains a necropolis and a nuragic village. The site, managed by an efficient co-operative, is well preserved and extended, allowing broad walks through the remains.

It is fenced and opens daily from 09.30 am to 7.00 pm (in summer), from 09.30 am to 4.30 pm (in winter). The entrance ticket is 4 €
