Great old windmill that makes for a great photo opportunity, here on Texel there are some old mills that are worth a detour from the route. Many have museums or small shops where you can buy flour, for example.

The mill De Traanroeier. The national monument dates back to 1727.

The mill only started its service in Zaandam. At that time the mill was already called De Traanroeier, probably a reference to the place where it stood: on the Weer, at the intersection with the Traanroeyersloot.
In 1902 the mill was brought to Texel in pieces. Sixty years later it was converted to be able to generate electricity. However, this did not prove to be profitable and after ten years the mill was shut down.
Through a campaign initiated by the village of Oudeschild, this listed building was restored to its former glory in 1999. The mill became the property of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mill De Traanroeier, it was restored and regained its original function as a grain mill.
The mill is freely accessible to museum visitors up to the second floor. When the millers are there, the third floor, the stone floor, can also be visited. A film about its function is shown in the mill and there is an exhibition about its special history.
