The sanctuary of the Santissimo Crocifisso, in Baroque style with neoclassical influences, stands where the small and very ancient church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria once stood. In the sacristy of that small church, on 23, 24 and 25 June 1657, an ancient wooden crucifix produced a series of miraculous healings, the presumed authenticity of which is attested by the documents of the time and by the building of the current sanctuary (from 1741 to 1759[), which replaced the old church. The project was commissioned to the Trapani architect Giovanni Biagio Amico and its construction was supported entirely by the Calatafimese people. Following the miraculous manifestations of 1657, the solemn singular feast of the Holy Crucifix began, in which religious faith and very ancient traditions converged, and which has been repeated for more than three centuries.
