The Doric temple of the ancient city of Segesta, on a Greek model, was probably never completed. It sits picturesquely alone in the landscape above a small gorge. The effect was more impressive, but a lot of tourist infrastructure has been created in the meantime, which somewhat affects the overall impression.
The ancient Greek-style theater was built in the 1st century BC. and greatly rebuilt by the Romans. The location is enchanting: on the top of the hill, at the highest point of the former city of Segesta, overlooking the bay of Castellamare.
It can be reached by a nice path from the temple entrance or by paid shuttle bus..
Private cars must be parked about 1 km below, there is a shuttle bus, all of course for a fee.

Segesta is today one of the most important archaeological parks in Sicily. The founding date of the ancient city is not known, although the area dates back to the 11th century BC. it was inhabited. According to the Greek historian Thucydides, the city was founded by the Elimi, a people of Trojan origin who crossed the Mediterranean Sea towards Sicily.

The ruins of Segesta are located on the slopes of Monte Barbaro, about 305 meters above sea level. Steep slopes on several sides and a wall on the flatter side near the temple protected the city. In this position Segesta controlled the main roads between the coast and the hinterland, and the hill dominates the Gulf of Castellammare. There is also a line of sight to the other two Elymer centers, Eryx and Entella, allowing signals to be sent between these three cities.

There is not only the theater on the mountain, but an entire city in ruins and the remains of a castle. If you take the trail, you save on the bus, see a lot more of the large area and still have a nice view of the temple. In summer you have to be used to walking in the sun.

At first glance, the temple appears a little rough, which is due to the fact that the construction of the temple is unfinished and the pillars still have a protective layer several centimeters thick. This was to protect the transiting pillars and would normally have been torn down upon completion of the temple, based on Wikipedia.

The grandiose location of the Doric temple with its 36 columns and the very good preservation made Segesta world famous.

The Doric Temple of Segesta is impressively embedded in the hills of Sicily and invites not only history lovers to take a walk into the past. The unfinished construction gives the temple a rough look, but that is precisely what makes it so attractive - the columns still have the original protective layer that would normally have been removed after completion. The hiking trail up rewards you with a wonderful view of the surrounding landscape and the Gulf of Castellammare.

What I particularly liked: From the temple, a beautiful path leads further up to the theater, which is located on the top of the hill. If you choose to walk instead of taking the shuttle, you will be rewarded with many smaller discoveries and fantastic views.

The entire complex exudes a special calm - it is a place that invites you to linger and makes history tangible. The magic of the ancient site can be enjoyed wonderfully here, especially in the off-season, when there is less going on.
