The Pinneberg is the 61.3 m above sea level. NHN highest elevation of the North Sea island of Helgoland and the Schleswig-Holstein district of Pinneberg.

The summit is an elevation of a crater rim protruding a few meters above the level of the Oberland, which was created in 1947 when bunkers were blown up. It can be reached via a short beaten path from the cliff edge path. About 400 m further north-west is the Lange Anna rock needle at the north-west end of the island.

The elevation remained nameless for a long time and was only marked by a survey point. The name Pinneberg has been used since 1998. This year a summit cross was erected there by mountain hikers from Itzehoe, which with this name alludes in its humor to the fact that Heligoland belongs to the district of the same name.

Yes, there are mountain trails and impressive, steep cliffs in the flat north of Germany too. However, you have to accept a somewhat unusual journey, namely by boat (or plane). In return, there is a "summit" - almost free - that is far more dominant than many mountains in the Alps.

Day tours by ship are offered - at least during the summer season - from several locations on the German North Sea coast. I decided on Büsum. The crossing from here takes about 3 hours (including disembarking) and you have about 3-4 hours, which was more than sufficient for me.

From the harbor it went over a few stairs to the (after?) Oberland, then over the signposted cliff edge path to Langen Anna (47m), the landmark of Helgoland (T1, 45min.). Unfortunately, the view was rather modest: gray sky - gray sea. But there was a lot going on in terms of birds. Impressive: The elegant landing approach of the northern gannet in the headwind - also impressive is the smell at the northern gannet airfield.

Then in 5 minutes over asphalted paths (T1) to the highest point, the Pinneberg (61m), which has even had a summit cross for several years. There was so much activity here that I couldn't even enter myself into the summit book. The Zugspitze sends its regards. Otherwise you have a very good view of the grassy bomb craters of the Oberland, the nearby 60s-style houses and of course the wide sea all around.
