Gannets are exceptionally good fliers and divers. They also attract attention because of their size and coloration. In Germany they only breed on Heligoland and have been since 1991. These pretty seabirds can be observed there every year in their breeding colonies.

The northern gannet is a goose-sized seabird from the gannet family. It is the northernmost breeding gannet of its kind and also the only one that breeds in Europe. Since 1991, Heligoland has been home to the only breeding colony of these impressive seabirds in the North Sea. Northern gannets prefer steep, rocky coasts for nesting. Thus, Heligoland, with its cliffs, is an ideal nesting site for the northern gannets of the North Sea islands. The northern gannet is definitely worth a walk.

The Lummenfelsen nature reserve is the smallest nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein and one of the smallest nature reserves in Germany. As a seabird breeding cliff, the area is of outstanding importance for several species, including the common murre, from which it takes its name. It is considered the nature reserve with the highest density of breeding birds in Germany.
