Very informative or interesting place / memorial stone.
The story about it:
The memorial stone is directly on the federal highway 54 approx. 3 km away from Ascheberg-Herbern in the direction of Werne. The restaurant opposite (SORRY, NO LONGER SERVED OR: OPEN - AS OF 12/16/20) is called “To the Last Wolf”. The location corresponds almost exactly to the place where the last wolf was shot in Westphalia on January 19, 1835. On January 19, 1935, the memorial stone was set on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of that day.
It bears the following inscription:
The last wolf in Westphalia.
On January 19, 1835 it was here
from the innkeeper Joseph Hennemann - Herbern
brought down the last wolf in Westphalia.
This memorial stone was placed on the hundredth anniversary.
January 19, 1935
The prepared wolf is still on display in the Natural History Museum in Münster.
After the end of the Thirty Years' War there was a great mess in Germany, which the wolves knew how to skillfully exploit for themselves. Large wolf hunts were then carried out in order to master the wolf plague. In the Münsterland, too, almost all wolves were killed or driven away by the end of the 17th century. Only in the impenetrable forests of the Sauerland did some wolves find protection and could not be tracked down. When a wolf appeared in Davert in the Münsterland, the fear and concern for the cattle was great. The hunters and farmers immediately went on a wolf hunt, but cleverly he escaped his pursuers again and again. In mid-January 1835, the wolf was seen more and more frequently in the Herbern area. It was therefore decided to carry out a large wolf hunt on January 19, 1835 with many hunters and drivers from all over the region. The innkeeper Joseph Hennemann managed to kill the wolf with two shots.
