The Torkapelle am Ackerl was created on the basis of a vow by the then Haeuselloh forester Hans Popp. He swore that if the barrier to the Czech Republic fell, he would build a chapel.
The design is symbolic: the chapel is open on both sides - the German and the Czech - as the borders should be. The granite slab on which the altar stands comes from Germany, as does the wood from which the chapel is built. The Schindl technique used, on the other hand, comes from the Bohemian Forest, which makes the chapel a real Czech-German co-production.
For about 15 years now, Germans and Czechs have been coming to this place during the Advent season to celebrate the annual "Ackerlweihnacht", which is definitely worth a visit (dates are announced in the events calendar). In 2020, like so many other events, the forest Christmas unfortunately fell victim to the corona pandemic 😢.
