During a hike or a walk, the impressive natural beauties of the High Fens are particularly easy to discover. For this purpose, paths and wooden walkways were laid through the raised bog. To protect the unique flora and fauna, however, access is regulated and divided into three zones. Certain zones are only accessible in the company of recognized nature guides.

Signal de Botrange 694m, UN Country High Point.
I walked this along with Kneif 560m (Luxembourg) and Vaalserberg 321m (Netherlands) so that I could say I did the Benelux three peaks in one day.

8km, 2hrs, ascent 96m.
A flat forest and duckboard walk through lovely countryside to take in Belgium's country HP. The duckboards take you over marshland and even though it is very flat we enjoyed ourselves. Parking and restaurant at the start and at the summit/top.

The core of the High Fens area forms a ridge of old schist from the Cambrian and Lower Devonian that runs from southwest to northeast. The first raised bogs formed on the poor, poorly permeable soil 10,000 years ago. These owe their existence partly to the enormous amounts of rainfall. The High Fens consist of low peat, transitional peat and small areas of raised peat.
